Online Vigilantes Mob Anchorage Mom Jessica Beagley After She Reveals Her "Hot Sauce" And "Cold Showers" Disciplinary Techniques On Dr. Phil's "Mommy Confessions"

-- All previous posts on this case available HERE, with the most recent post appearing first.

An Anchorage mother, Jessica Beagley, is reaping some strong criticism after she appeared on Dr. Phil's "Mommy Confessions" segment on November 17th and revealed that she used "hot sauce" and "cold showers" as disciplinary techniques to deal with one of her six children who displayed persistent behavioral problems and who lies when confronted. Much of the criticism is highly judgmental. A full summary of this story, combining information gathered from a number of pertinent links, is posted on Mormonism-Unveiled.

Primary media story published by the Anchorage Press; supplemental story in the Anchorage Daily News. Additional sources of information include the Recovery from Mormonism (RFM) forum and Free Republic.

Summary: Jessica and Gary Beagley, identified as observant members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, live in Anchorage, Alaska and have six children. Three of them are Russian adoptees, two of them twins. One of the twins, seven-year-old Kristoff, has persistently caused disciplinary problems and won't own up to misdeeds when confronted. To cope, Jessica Beagley has Kristoff drink hot sauce whenever he lies. He's not forced to swallow it; he's allowed to spit it out after Jessica finishes reproving him. In addition, Jessica will also administer cold showers to Kristoff as an additional disciplinary tool, which I would agree is excessive.

One of her six children filmed one of the disciplinary sessions. It ended up being shown on Dr. Phil's program on November 17th. You can view the video from Dr. Phil HERE, and read the transcript HERE. However, we also have a YouTube video, embedded below:

You can see that while Jessica does administer the hot sauce and cold shower treatments, she never loses control of herself during the encounter. She is assertive, but not aggressive. Thus I would characterize her as more of a disciplinarian rather than an abuser. The provocation was legitimate; Kristoff had received three discipline cards in elementary school for throwing pencils, sword-fighting with another child, and acting out in another class, and then lied to Jessica about the in-school discipline.

To determine how this should be best handled, first we must strip the story down to the most pertinent facts:

-- Jessica Beagley has had problems with only one of her six children. There are No documented problems with the other children.
-- Jessica Beagley has been authoritative, but I don't sense an abusive spirit.
-- The Beagleys are devout members of the LDS Church, most likely possessing a temple recommend. A recommend is considered spiritually vital by devout Mormons.

Consequently, the best solution not only considers the most pertinent facts, but effectively balances the concerns of the children, the parents, the state, and the church:

-- While no criminal charges are warranted, the Office of Children's Services should consider removing Kristoff from the home until the parents successfully complete a professional course on child rearing/anger management, and then satisfactorily complete a follow-on probation period to show they've mastered the lessons learned. OCS does not need to remove the other children at this time.

-- The local unit of the LDS Church needs to get involved. While neither disfellowshipment nor excommunication are warranted, I believe it would be appropriate for their bishop to consider revoking their temple recommend until they show an improved ability to cope with the challenges of raising Kristoff. The loss of a temple recommend does create a perceptible sense of deprivation in a devout Mormon, and can be a powerful motivator towards improved behavior. Members of the LDS Church can get help with family issues through LDS Family Services; specific help with adopted children available HERE.

Unfortunately, many people prefer vengeance to justice. The Beagley family had a blog, but they found it necessary to "privatize" it because they got spammed with online vigilantes leaving abusive comments. One poster on Free Republic documented some of the comments:

From one mormon mom to another——I was disgusted by your appearance on Dr. Phil. The state should take your children away and you should be excommunicated. The hot sauce was over the line. You are abusing children who as Russian orphans, are the most vulnerable among us and to think they want to spend eternity with you is a joke.

You are not a mother. You are a monster and do not deserve to have these “sweet spirits” in you home. Dr. Phil cannot help you. You need to be jailed and these children taken to loving homes. May you burn in hell or wherever you religion sends monsters like you.

You are sick twisted people. Forever Families? So you can abuse them forever? You don’t deserve to have children. Hope the state takes them away. You are animals thinking you’re so righteous because you have a temple recommend. You are pigs. That boy will grow up some day and kill you in your sleep.

Saw your Dr. Phil episode. I hope your kids are taken away from you. You are a complete MONSTER. Pouring hotsauce in your child’s mouth? Forcing them to take freezing cold showers? WHAT IN HEAVENLY FATHER’S NAME IS WRONG WITH YOU?????

I have two adoptive children with severe Reactive Attachment Disorder. I DO know how hard it is, but that is NEVER an excuse to abuse a child. How dare you post blogs pretending to be some wonderful, caring mother when you ABUSE YOUR CHILDREN???

Thousands of sweet and loving LDS couples are dying to adopt so they can have a forever family and cannot. Yet you get a chance to have a big family with beautiful children and you SQUANDER it! I hope your recommend is YANKED out from under you because you have NO BUSINESS in such a wonderful place and you have NO RIGHT to be sealed to these kids.

Much of this is hysterical nonsense. Jessica Beagley is NOT a "monster"; she's a concerned mother who is in greater need of help than judgment. I'm also disturbed that a number of self-identified Mormons have posted these type of comments. We must remember D&C 121:43; "Reproving betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost; and then showing forth afterwards an increase of love toward him whom thou hast reproved, lest he esteem thee to be his enemy". Note that the period in the sentence goes after the word "enemy", NOT after the word "sharpness".

Let us leave judgment unto those to whom it's appointed.

  1. Personally, I think the woman is quite restrained. Personally, I'd not be so mellow.

Ideally, everyone of the morally superior commenters should be blessed with one of these kids.

  2. They should ALL learn to mind their own business and stop acting like vampires.

  3. This is sickening. Anyone who commits child abuse like this should not be allowed to have children. Even the fact that she committed this act reveals a serious mental problem. What person in their right mind would do that to a human being? And "hysterical nonsense"? Those comments were far from hysterical, they were the truth.

  6. I find it funny that all the comments I have heard about this woman are all SHE SHOULD DIE or SHE SHOULD BE IN A MENTAL HOSPITAL... when real kids get beaten all the time and no one really says anything (Yes even when they are on dr.phil or the steve fuck face show) but for a cold shower and some hot sauce the perant should be in a mental hospital... grow the fuck up

But I do agree she is being a huge bitch and if she dosn't smarten up her kids should be taken

  7. Who in the world does that? I LITERALLY cried when watching the video. I am a mother to a 3-year old, and yes, children can have behavioral issues, but guess what?! That's what they do--they are children for crying out loud! Who pours hot sauce in their child's mouth?! I'm an adult, and I can't even tolerate hot sauce, so imagine what the child is feeling. Then, the cold showers--really?! "Disciplinary tools" like this are not what's best, in my opinion. I really think it could scar a child. She needs to remove herself from the situation, and go back to the drawing board because this is not the answer for "discipline."

  8. When I first saw this video I first had a similar reaction as the people who posted some of the selected comments above, except I am not a Mormon and don't know what a 'Recommend' is, though I will look it up ;) Her tone of her voice I think was the worst part of it and I think that's what caused the images of my hands around her neck when I saw it.

Anyway - now that my initial emotional reaction is over, let's not be too quick to judge. We don't know how the kids are treated otherwise, and we don't know how often this happens (I haven't seen the Dr. Phil episode.)

I have worked with children with reactive attachment disorder (RAD) and they can test the patience of even the most highly trained and emotionally detached professional, and part of the job description of 'Parent' is being emotionally attached.

There is training for adoptive and foster parents of RAD kids, and RAD camps for both. Instead of virtually lynching this woman, I think she needs help and training. RAD kids are really cool, but can also be reeeaally difficult.

  9. As the father of a 6 year old boy who has some behavioral challenges, there is a MUCH more appropriate way to both act and discipline. One way is anchoring him in the moment by having him look at you in the eye (NOT using a cold shower). Quiet time in a chair - no tv, radio, etc. is much more healthy (psychologically) than hot sauce.

Using scripture in an attempt to justify this behavior is just going to turn more people off to organized religion when most recognize it's WRONG.

  10. Wow, you are clearly almost as psychotic as Jessica. This kid did what to warrant physical discomfort and psychological torture? Throwing pencils, sword fighting with other kids (I'm assuming here that they were not using real swords) and acting out in class... a.k.a. being a child. And you cite some fairy tale as a reason we shouldn't judge this woman? Sorry, but for the rest of us who are trying to make the world a better place and reduce suffering, we're required to use our judgment. It might be easy for you to shut off your brain and let the horrors of this world continue, safe in the knowledge that some mythological supernatural force will straighten things out in its own way, but I'm going to go ahead and do something that actually makes a difference.

  11. My brother has severe behavioural issues and I have never once seen my parents do ANYTHING like this. I was only smacked once as a child and once it happened my dad felt so bad, he told me he was sorry and how wrong he was to do it. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's right but parents do make mistakes, they're human too. This woman on the other hand is out of line, you should never be given a child into your care if this is the only way you can think to discipline them.

She should be ashamed of herself.

  12. wow I would hate my life. I hope she knows her children hate her.

  14. It's a child........!!!!!! Not an adult.....
    Feeling sick watching this video.....
Why they adopted him? For the outside world to look good?
Is this the way to teach a kid what love and respect is? I'm sorry somebody take those children away from them

  15. Whats all this about RAD - this kid is NORMAL - he lies because he is TERRIFIED of receiving abusive punishment from his mum - he is so young and scared that he will be incapable of reasoning out the pros of not lying and possibly halving his abusive punishment by telling the truth for goodness sake! He is 5! They reckon they believe in Jesus as the ultimate example - would their Jesus pour hot sauce into a 5 year olds mouth, douse them in an ice cold shower whilst yelling and intimidating them into compliance? Such treatment wil result in this kid becoming emotionally detached from the parents and angry and rebellious when he becomes strong enough to fight back - he will also develop the defence of becoming a BETTER liar to avoid punishment!! the only way to teach a kid not to lie is to teach them how it makes people feel and show the NATURAL fall-out and consequences of lies by using real-life examples - NOT by inventing methods of abuse for their every misdemeanour!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh - and the comment about people being vampires? Your satanic bible dogma is as damaging as any other religious dogma - teaches you to not acknowledge others making you feel guilty - thus subtly detaching you from natural empathy for the pain you might cause in others - that my friend is a recipe for developing sociopathic tendancies! It is an unnatural extreme that one of my brothers got into as a response to our extreme Mormon upbringing - both sets of dogma have harmed him in one way or another! think about it - the satanic bible was written by some pretentious git who gave his opinions on life such credence he published them as a bible lol!! Guilt in small doses helps to ground people in the reality of the consequences of their actions and consideration for others in genera. Lack of guilt or an excess of guilt is unhealthy. If the genuinly hurt feelings of another human cannot induce a feeling of sympathy (or personal guilt if you are partly responsible for their distress) then you have become detached from reality and the human experience!

What is he going to do fight back?! he is utterly DEFENSE-LESS! Hearing him cry broke my heart into little pieces! he is OBVIOUSLY terrified of that MONSTER that dares to call herself a "mother" . this video DISGUSTED me and will surely haunt me for days to come. The idiotic person who wrote this article that is saying "Ohh blah blah blah dont be quick to judge her blah blah BULLSHIT BULLSHIT!" yeah everyone does have different opinions but when it comes to ABUSING poor children i tend to take matters a little more seriously. how they SHOULD be treated. This monster needs to be killed, hung,or sent to jail for life. I don't know if all mormons think that "treating" children like this is okay but i noticed that mostly mormons are saying "oh no please dont judge her" yeah whatever assholes. And for the person who said "GROW THE FUCK UP" well you grow the fuck up buddy and fucking realize how crazy this bitch is. And to those that are decent human beings i want to applaud you guys for seeing the big picture in this situation. i also want to applaud the mormons that saw the wickedness of this MONSTER. BASICALLY fuck her, fuck her life, fuck her husband who let this go on. i HOPE those children get taken away. ALSO an example that i want to bring to attention that this WAS CHILD ABUSE; in the book "A child called it" that devil of a mom made david pelzer [the child] sit in cold water or get into a cold shower. OH WOW!! D: A BOOK ABOUT CHILD ABUSE HAS SOME OF THE SAME "PUNISHMENTS" THAT MONSTER DID!! OH WOWW! *sarcasm* Okay im done. anyone who thinks this is right is a satanic worshiper or an idiot. fuck this women,I hope she gets whats coming to her.

  22. I love these comments. On the one hand, you have people who are justifiably upset after having just witnessed three minutes of criminal ignorance and/or sociopathy. On the other hand, you have a good number of people inexplicably angry at the preceding group of angry folk. This is how riots happen!

Take a deep breath and read carefully as I break off for everyone a great big piece of truth. Yes, this event was awful and, yes, this woman has some significant mental health challenges ahead of her. But, we are ignoring the real problem here: ORGANIZED RELIGION. I mean, it's one thing if you're religious, if you're super dumb and can't do anything about it. But, it's quite another thing to be super dumb and try to validate and justify your mental deficiencies by congregating with other super dumb people. When you guys get together, you become dangerous; dumb begets dumber, which begets dumber still and so on, ad infinitum, until you become violently dumb. For where else do the dumb go when they hit the wall? They literally HIT THE WALL; dumb people become angry when they are forced to confront their stupidity.

People of organized religion everywhere, DISUNITE!

  23. They should have had her eat some habanero peppers and then push her into an ice lake on the Dr. Phil Show.

Anyone who thinks that is an acceptable way to treat a child needs their brain checked. Unbelievable!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Removing this child from the home is not the answer. He's been there and done that, and doesn't need to relive the experience. This woman needs some expert advice and understanding of her actions. She needs some viable alternative means to deal with this innocent soul; something more gentle. Just for a moment, put yourself now in Mom's shoes, and imagine what this video has wrought. Look at your kid, and think what he is thinking. "Folks want my mom dead. They what to hurt her and dad. I am afraid."
If this whole experience disgusts you; them imagine the experiences we know nothing of and can only imagine. The silent ones.

  25. She's a sick bitch, I hope the kid is removed from there and put in a happy place. SHe should be prosecuted for systematic abuse too, it's obvious that she regularly subjects this boy to regular torture like this.

And I use the word 'torture' advisedly: we are talking about a 7 year old boy here, this level of abuse to a child of that young age is certainly torture as far as I am concerned. To hear his screams in the cold shower was heart-wrenching and sickening

  26. Margaretha U.12/04/2010 12:10 PM

The mother thinks she is doing the right thing, as most abusers, even pedophiles, think they are. Have the hot sauce and cold showers solved the child's discipline problems? It is the mother, not the child, who needs serious reprogramming and if her church looks the other way, they are no better than the Catholic bishops who ignored serial rapist priests.

  28. I have felt a loss of control on MANY occasions, but never once ever thought it was a good idea to torture my kid. He is not a robot he is a child! Children are innocent, they learn by what they are taught and if you try and teach your child to fear you and to obey, then you are not teaching them anything. You have to teach your child the difference between right and wrong, you don't torture it into him. If he fears you when doing something wrong, he will just find a way to do that wrong thing without you finding out. Instead you should teach him what it actually feels like to know in his heart and mind what is wrong and what is right. Teach him to use his own judgement to do right, not by fear, but by knowledge.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Jessica does not love this child, she looks as though she truly does enjoy torturing him. It's like she is getting her "revenge" for the supposed stress that this child causes her. The way she looks while being interviewed makes me very angry. I have 4 children including a set of twin boys all of my children are under the age of 7.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I tell my 6 year old that I am very disappointed in her for doing something wrong and when she sees how upset and sad I am that makes her realize that she did wrong and we talk and I ask her questions like "why did you think it was ok to do that?" "were you angry?" "did you know that was wrong?" By me saying that I was very disappointed in her really upset her and she would cry because she then knew that what she did was wrong. I am glad to see her cry when we talk and she realizes that she did wrong because that shows me that she is learning from this. Methods of torture will only harden his heart and make him more mean and hateful as he gets older she is ruining his innocence :-(

    ReplyDelete
  31. Love and logic!! I know sometimes it gets stressful for some parents, but you have to have an endless amount of patience no matter what. My hair is literally falling out in chunks sometimes I am serious, lol I get so stressed out because my daughter has gotten into trouble at school 5 times already since school started. I have an autistic twin boy and the other might possibly be autistic as well. I also have a 4 month old baby girl. Talk about stress? Out of control? I feel really bad for this person who thinks that what she is doing is her last option because it isn't. I've learned that when you react negatively when a child pisses you off, they are going to continue to see how far you will go before you lose it. It's not a "deliberate plan" of theirs it's just curiousity. Don't get me wrong I believe in discipline oh yes I do! I do not believe in torture or abuse. I punish my 6 year old when she does something wrong, now that she can write...she gets to write sentences. Its a win/win you see because they are learning to improve their penmanship while learning a lesson as well. Or timeouts. Sometimes they don't work....but I make them work!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Consistency is the key with a punishment but most importantly love, logic and let them be. You love them when they tell you the truth, even if they lied first. Then you explain to them WHY it was wrong and you make them explain to you why so you know that they understand, you tell them the consequences for if they do it again therefore you are giving them the freedom to choose to do that wrong again now that they know what will happen next time. That is how they learn right from wrong. Children naturally WANT to do the right thing, children naturally WANT to learn. So take advantage of that and be a good parent and teach them right.

  33. Send the little fella over to live with my family in Oz. Our kids enjoy tomato sauce on their dinner and they have nice warm bubble baths. Not hot sauce and cold showers !!!
A lot has been written about how she isn't abusing the child.....I could barely watch the video without becoming very angry at her. I'm going with my gut and saying what she is doing is very very wrong indeed !

  34. Kristoff needs a new family, and Jessica needs to be put in jail!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. this happens because Americans are so f*ck*ng sensitive about spanking their children. "Oh spanking kids is wrong, so lets try to do something else"... This is nothing more than a product of a failed disciplinary system in America... Time-outs and other "disciplines" of the same nature simply do not work. We need to un-demonize spanking and support it, then we won't have kids with mental trauma from this type of crap. She isn't abusing her kids, she's trying to discipline them. All you idiots who think this is abuse need to re-evaluate the situation. Abuse occurs for no reason, a drunk parent or maybe a parent who has anger issues and assaults the children out of ill intent. She is attempting to teach her son not to lie and to behave in school. All she needs is education on how to properly discipline her kids. People who are hating on her were probably coddled when they were children and don't know real discipline.

That crazy voice scared me more that someone yelling uncontrollably.

  39. She thinks this kid has some weird "detachment" problem. Really? Is this bitch actually confused because the child is afraid or indifferent around her? In that house just using the bathroom is like visiting his torture chamber and yet she's confused about his behavior. This lady only filmed what she wanted others to see. Imagine how bad it really gets when she's really pissed. Hot sauce inhaled into the lung of a seven year old can be fatal. She thinks he has a personality disorder? Wow I wonder why. She is the person responcable for his mental health and physical safety. What a whack job.

  40. I visited Jessica Beagley's blog before she "blocked" it. It was all unicorns and rainbows about their happy "forever" family.

Not one HONEST entry about her struggling with the Russian kids, asking for help, or even having an occasional day when she was feeling a little overwhelmed.

That Mormon "temple recommend" she may have is not worth the paper it is printed on. She is not a truthful or kind person.

  41. The way he cried in the shower completely broke my heart. How any grown adult, blood parent or not, could continue with the torture after hearing that has no soul. She is stealing his innocence, and making him a hardened soul who will probably hate her and never forgive her when he realizes this is not normal or acceptable, because one day he will.
The terror in his voice at the beginning was enough to let me know this was not the first time he was in trouble for being a normal little boy. Lying is not good, but I would have lied too if I knew the punishment that was awaiting me. I lied when I was kid, but my parents never punished me with torture or abuse. They let me know how disappointed they were in me, and believe me, that was enough. They allow me develop a conscience that has since guided me to be a balance human being who does right because it's the right thing to do, not because I am afraid I will get caught for doing otherwise.

I don't wish harm to this woman, but I don't think she has a soul, or the nurturing compassion needed to raise a balanced human being. She's making a mess of this little person under the illusion she's teaching him to be better human being. She is most surely damaging him beyond repair.

I wish I could hug him and tell him how good he is.

  48. To think that the father of this boy is an Anchorage Police officer...

Watching her yell at this boy is almost unbearable. She's not disciplining. From my account, it clearly looked like she was enjoying watching him squirm. The power trip she was on...what a total monster.

Who cares if she has an excuse from her church?! Do church members commit no crimes? Last I checked, several members of different religions have been charged with various crimes.

And this article was obviously written by either a fellow mormon, or Jessica Beagley herself.

    What a sick, sick woman.

    ReplyDelete
  49. What she did to this boy is outrageous! I hope she goes to jail and all her children get taken away from her. She does not deserve the privilege of raising them. And if her husband the police officer knew about it he should be behind bars as well.

    ReplyDelete
  50. The charges appear "politically motivated"????

Jessica Beagley is not running for any political office I know of. If there is a silver lining, it is that the topic of child abuse has been raised in a public forum.

Mrs. Beagley is an example of how NOT to raise a child. What happened to the support and counsel promised by Dr. Phil? If she told them to bug out of her "private business" then I'm glad someone called the cops on her.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I cried when I watched this. The pain she inflicted on him. She really hurt that child in an extreme, excruciating manner which will not only effect him physically but mentally for many years to come.

The way this woman "disciplines" that child may be calm, cool and collect rather than angry and comfrontational BUT that just makes it all the more worse because this abuse is all about POWER.

It's about her power over the child. It's about her loosing that power by the child lying to her.

It's about her asserting her power and dominance over this small defenceless child in her care, showing him "who is boss" - and that's worse than just acting out in anger, because instead of it being uncontrolled anger, it's controlled sustained abuse.

How is, giving this child hot sauce in his mouth, which would burn his mouth and cause him incredible pain for many hours afterwards, and then cruelly torture him by putting him directly in a freezing cold shower anything less than abuse?

Imagine, doing that to an adult. That would hurt a grown woman or man, let alone what it does to a child half or more of their size? It's just so wrong.

I don't see, how these techniques are any different to that woman getting a belt and hitting him over the buttocks with it with all her strength, starving him for days, or whipping him.

For those who are supportive of her, if a child, were to lie about something, do you think it's ok to put the child under a scolding HOT shower? or put their hand on hotplates? Why is it different, that the shower is cold and not hot? it still inflicts pain. can send the child into shock.

It might not create physical stars, but you can sure as hell bet it creates mental ones and this child is going to be traumatised. He should be removed from her care.

    This is abuse.

  52. Woman like that shouldn't be allowed to adopt. It's no wonder Russia & other countries are wary about letting American's adopt their children when American Parents treat the children so badly. It's disgusting and this woman should loose all her children for such horrific abuse on this poor child.

  53. I am someone who was spanked as a child and disciplined and I continue it with my child. But I cried when I heard the agony this child was in. My son is five and there is a difference between his crying when he is being bratty or wanting his way and when he is fearful. That child was scared for his life. She set him up to fail and then tortured him. She also abused her daughter who filmed it by setting a poor parenting example. She did not teach him the consequences of being dishonest. She only taught him that if you are bad I will hurt you. If one adult did that to another adult, it would be criminal and assault. But since he is an adopted child it is ok. I would prefer he received a two second spanking and a calm conversation than that tirade of abuse. If I witnessed someone acting that way, I would not allow it. My son admits when he is bad because he knows that even though he will be disciplined he can trust that I love him and would never do anything to truly hurt him. This woman shows no love and he seems to feel no love, it is obvious. Imagine what goes on when there are no cameras.

  54. It is a shame that the Child Protective Services are not doing their job by removing ALL of the children. This was just ONE video that was posted about only ONE of the children. She has probably done the same with the other children as well. The Anchorage Police Department are also a disservice by allowing the father/husband to not also be charge jointly with his wife. He knew about it and even stands by her side about the cold showers. He never did anything to stop it all. And the Mormon church has obviously not done anything to this family except remain silent, which is a sign of going along with it all as well. Finally, the bitch and her husband should ROT their asses in jail !!!

  55. There are other ways of handling a child with problems. I was at my end with my son, constant calls from after school program and school itself. We went to our pediatrician as we felt there was something wrong. Turned out he has ODD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder. He was prescribed Rysperdol (sp??) and was very good for two years. Fearing what side effects may occur in his adult life, we opted to take him off of the meds. He did well for a year or so, then fell back into the same problems, lying, stealing, hurting other children with no remorse. We found an incredible counselor who taught us how to deal with disciplines and situations. He completely turned our lives around. I am happy to report, my son is a wonderful teenager, with an issue here or there but nearly not as constant as in his younger days.

Basically saying, there is no need to treat a child the way she does. Children learn from us and the cycle will be repeated, should he reach adulthood.

Have you even had your child evaluated or know his history in Russia?? As seen in so many programs and profiles, how bad those adoption agencies are with those children. The emotional scarring they have and all they endure while in those homes. Do you even know who his mother was and what she had done while pregnant with him. There are so many answers to the way he is now. You have to find that out in order to rectify the problem and work with him.

That poor boy will be scarred for life after all that you have done to him. The way you discipline is not love, it is pure hatred towards him. You may be calm in doing it most likely because you enjoy it. Taking out your frustration on him is not the answer. You need help and you children should be removed.

I pray for your children and hope they find a better life without you!

  56. I think for starters this woman's punishment should be to have her mouth stuffed with hot sauce over and over and then stick her in a cold shower to see how it feels. She does not deserve to have any children. I think she should be put in jail for the rest of her life because this precious little boy is going to be scarred for the rest of his life.
This is so sad. There are so many loving people out there who want children and will take loving care of them, if you can't then don't have chilren.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Like others, i cried while watching this video and had to stop it before the shower incident was over. This woman's actions are utterly inexcusable. That little boy needs to be loved, not dominated into submission. And the child who filmed/witnessed this (obviously, another way of shaming the boy), has also been harmed. What an awful, sad, and unnecessary situation. I hope they remove the little guy from the home and get the entire family into counselling. As for the mother, she'll have her day in court.

    ReplyDelete
  58. At no point in the video does this woman ever tell her child WHY lying is wrong.

All this teaches the child is that if you do something bad, you'd better not get caught. It doesn't teach the child why he shouldn't lie.

What this does is teach the child "If someone doesn't do what you want, hurt them." No wonder he's having problems at school!

There are so many stupid ignorant people in the world, and they all have kids.

Also this article seems to be defending her actions by citing her years of service to the church. The church is half the problem! Spare the rod, spoil the child, etc. The church is probably where she got the idea that nazi-esque tactics like these are okay!

    What a freak.

  59. Torture is not discipline. She makes me utterly sick. I've been teary for days after watching her. That poor, helpless child has no defense against her. And it's so clear she hates him. I would love to put her fat, ugly, monsterous ass in a cold shower with hot sauce inbetween her ugly cheeks every time she displays any sort of inappropriate behavior for the rest of her life. I am an exmormon, who had very loving parents, and I treat my son the same way...with love and patience.

  60. does anyone know how to contact this mom? I have no intentions of sending her hate mail. Just the opposite, in fact.

    ReplyDelete
  61. The child knew the behavior was not acceptable and he obviously knew what the consequence was, everyone has a choice and he chose to disobey, therefore he must be punished as anyone would be. Of course he was upset, if he were enjoying it then it would not be a punishment. No one enjoys watching a child get punished, but would you enjoy watching that child growing up with no discipline at all; being the child's school teacher who cannot teach him because he's so unruly? This child will not be traumatized by a few minutes of punishment when there are countless hours spent in family prayer and scripture studies, hugs and kisses and much more love poured out to him. Where are those videos??? GIVE HER A BREAK and "judge not that ye be not judged."

    ReplyDelete
  62. Anyone who thinks this is not reprehensible behavior is a child abuser themselves. You people are sick if you think abusing a six year old child is ok in any way . . . and you Cricket are an idiot. I feel sorry for your four beautiful children . . . they are going to end up ugly like their ignorant mother!

  63. The kid already feels unwanted. Since he was an orphan already, the parents who take the two in will have to be patient and understanding people. She admittedly is in over her head and lacks the parental skills to deal with him. Of course if she lost it completely, are you really naive enough to think she would send in the tape? People always act different when they are being filmed. The main thing here is the welfare of the child and how he feels. Kids do these things, they make bad decisions and dont know why, its part of growing up. This kid feels unwanted since he was an orphan and now is singled out in the family as someone who isnt wanted and as someone that cant do anything right. How do you think he will fare phsycologically as he grows up feeling this way?
I could give a crap about the Mormon doctrine , or the person who wrote this story. The only one I see politicizing it here is you. I didnt even know she was a Mormon until I read this story. You are doing a great job defending the abuser here. Its people like you who tell girls it was their fault they were abused or raped and that they should be ashamed of themselves and keep it a secret. They must have sinned and brought this on themselves. That really what your story sounds like. WE ALL JUDGE, including you, including everyone here. WWJD. Tell us all that this behavior is what Jesus would do, quote your Mormon doctrine and tell everyone how wicked they are, quote scripture while you point a finger in judgement. I would love to see her face if she turned around and saw Christ standing there watching her. Better yet if she pulled back the shower curtain and it was Jesus kneeling in the cold water instead.Isnt this child one of the "least of these"? It really is Christ,Isnt it...well ISNT IT?

  64. I never punish my kids with any punishment that I would not we willing to accept myself. Thank the Lord that he forgives us instead of giving us the punishment that we deserve which is death. I wonder if if the parents give themselves such punishments when they wrong each other or someone else.
Im sure they would NEVER get in trouble at work or lie to their boss or each other. They would never...shhh...sin, would they. It's just not done, not in HER house. Did you catch what she said? HER house. I thought the man was the head of a Mormon household?
Mormonism, Jehovah's witness, Catholisim, any religion that is of man made doctrine all have one thing in common. They all think they have the answer, they alone are the chosen by God as THE chosen ones. Ive been told by religious people that its their way or hell period. German baptists are taught that they they are the only ones that are going to heaven, the Baptists said the same, the Jews are Gods chosen people so they are the only ones, Ive heard the same from all of them. Religion...please. get a Bible and read it for yourself, you dont need someone else to tell you what it means. Confess your sins to God and accept Christ for yourself. You dont need to go through "proper channels and priests" to be heard by your heavenly father. He is waiting for you all the time, anytime, anywhere. Go to a church that teaches about Jesus. If the doctrine is bigger than the bible then find another church. Go to one that non-denominational. Its Christs job to clean people up from the inside, not mans job to dictate rules and judgement from a holier than thou delusion of grandeur. We are all equally filthy and guilty of sin in the eyes of God. When you stand before judgement, your pastor isnt going to be their, or your priest, or someone from the board, or the master of the lodge, or someone from district. STOP FOLLOWING MAN AND FOLLOW JESUS. Pray to him and do only as he instructs. If someone tells you that you need to do what they say cause God told them that you were supposed to, then ask God for yourself. You dont need to belong to any club except Jesus' club. Its all about him, always has been, always will be.

  65. This woman is CLEARLY MENTALLY DERANGED and a SADIST.

When this little boy grows up to be a man and he beats prostitutes to death, she'll be one proud mother.

ALL of the children need to be removed from her home. She is a dangerous and horrible person.

  66. Her husband, a so-called law enforcement officer, should be both prosecuted and fired for failing to uphold his oath and office as a sworn officer since he is/was aware of his wife's behavior and failed to act to protect the safety of this child. Needless to say, her prosecution should be a moot point. Of course, this is in the State of Palin...

  67. So far I haven't see anyone comment on the real issue here--Jessica Beagley's haircut. Does she not own a mirror?

  68. Sounds like what this unhappy mom really needs is just little trip to a foreign country and a firm screaming at followed up with a forced cold shower and a bottle of hot sauce shoved into her mouth followed up with a little Q and A as to why it is that she needs to be punished. The same holds true for the author of this article, since you're a grown up I'm sure you'll take it easier, and you won't notice anything abusive in spirit about it, promise.

Just kidding, that would be barbaric and criminal.

The focus should be the safety and well being of these kids, not a rationalization for what you do to your own.

  70. As a Mom, teacher, and ex-mormon @Cricket (and anyone else defending this woman) You're a delusional fucking nut job! You say "This child will not be traumatized by a few minutes of punishment when there are countless hours spent in family prayer and scripture studies, hugs and kisses and much more love poured out to him." There's a difference between discipline & punishment, and she crossed the line into abuse! Family prayer & scripture studies & her type of "love" will not make up for the mental & emotional damage. You can hear the terror in the poor boys voice & see it in his movements! Educate yourself about before you open your mouth again, because it's people like YOU that allow this shit to go on unchecked. I sincerely hope you have no children since you think this is all ok, I shudder to think what your kids go through if you do have them. Child Protective Services needs to take those kids out of that monsters home, and prosecute her, and she needs to be stripped of her "calling" as she obviously does not belong around children.

    ReplyDelete
  71. You can see how terrorised, scared and helpless the little boy was, he wasn't learning anything from this ... what is disturbing is that he knew the sequence of his (torture session) and that is a clear indication that this happenned many times before. The mother was carrying on his punishment like a ritual...
I want to add that she was punishing him for far more than a little bad behaviour at school. she was punishing him for being him.
I don't care about what religion this woman belongs to...she belongs to the human race and she made me ashamed of being human.

    ReplyDelete
  72. The 'mother' is a sadistic bitch who obviously got off on the power and fear in the situation. That kid was scared witless and the fact that she had the economy sized bottle of hot sauce ready to go in the bathroom cabinet shows this was not an isolated incident. And the cold shower? Did you hear him scream in fear and humiliation? Anyone who thinks this is acceptable behavior from a parent is as sadistic and power-mad as that lunatic Jessica Beagley. She should be tossed behind bars and subjected to the same bull she visited on that poor child. What a horrible, horrible woman.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Jessica Beagley is clearly a narcissist. Why else would she have her ten year old child videotape her actions and then send it to a television show? As an ex-Mormon, I'm not surprised though. When people live in a fantasy belief system based upon lies, how can we possibly expect them to operate in sane, conscious manner? I pity this little boy. Bad enough he has to live in Alaska. Worse he lives with Mormons. My prayers are for him right now.

  75. Matthew 18:6 "But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and [that] he were drowned in the depth of the sea." Jesus

Okay, I will say right now that I am a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. However, I will note that there seems to be a "circle the wagons" attitude many members have when an LDS person is shown as bad in the public light -- try posting something about the Marriott Hotels and porn, or jump on Harry Reid's politics, or even say that this Jessica Beagley lady seems to display a rather psychopathic aura and watch out -- many members will accuse you of being the bad guy, and make up a million excuses for any Mormon celebrity. Maybe this is common for any religion that has a history of being persecuted and is still in the minority. Still, I would merely ask those who jump to Beagley's defense to ask themselves if they would trust allowing her to adopt any child or grandchild you have. If you have no kids, and she came to you to ask for a sperm or egg donation so she could have a child (let's pretend she or her husband suddenly became sterile) would you consent to it?

  76. Just a guy with a Ph.D.8/18/2011 1:41 PM

I am amused that you call this mother "authoritative." Based on what? She is the definition of authoritarian. So I must ask, dear writer - where did you get your psychology degree? I will put my Ph.D. in psychology up against whatever degree you have (I am guessing none!) Don't talk about something that you know too little about!
